This is a project that a freind of mine (and a friend of the CVO - was an instructor at the very first CVO track day) is working on. I figured folks here could appreciate it.

Here is the starting point. In 2004-5-6 (or was that 5-6-7?) Chuck finished 2nd, 1st and 2nd in the G Production national championship with the Orange Rabbit - 1.5 liters of 8v fury, weighing in at a svelte 1740# with driver. Unfortunately the GP class was folded, and they moved the car up one class to FP - dropping weight, getting wider wheels, wider track and allowing larger GTI valves and Golf throttle body.
Image

Even with the allowed mods, the lighter weight was hard to get to, and when the National Championship Runoffs moved to Road America, the best Chuck could coax out of the old car was 14th, in a very competitive field.
Image

The solution has been determined to start fresh, with a new tub, and build it even lighter than before - target 1500 with driver. Since we were starting fresh, Chuck elected to reduce frontal area and aero drag along the way as well.

Here is the new donor:

Since it was already a race car, there was some initial hope that we could save some time and use some of what was there. Unfortunately that turned out to be a false hope.
Image

The fenders were heavier than stock, with fiberglass flares grafted on.
Image

The front spoiler was a case study in back yard engineering.
Image
Image

And the cage was deemed insufficient for Chuck's needs.
Image
Image

Then the rest of the shell needed to be cleaned down.
Image
Image
Image

Patched up.

And trimmed off.

Major projects would include

Safety - fresh cage, new fuel cell, new seat, new belts/mounts
Body - light hood, hatch, doors, fenders, quarters
Aero - air dam and flare design
Powertrain - bigger 1.6 motor with more zing and 9000 rpm range, lighter mounts
Suspension - transfer the developed Rabbit stuff over

Cage progress.

New motor mounts.

Internals.

And bodywork.

Fuel cell moved to passenger side because it reduces the polar moment of inertia (makes it easier for the car to turn) when more of the mass is closer to cg of the car, offsets the driver weight better, and can sit lower (rules specify minimum height for a fuel cell mounted under the car, not one inside...)

The doors got lighter too.

And the cleaned up underbody got a coat of rustoleum.

Pedals were converted to lighter weight bottom mount parts.

Moving day.

Lots of interior detail to wrap up.

And somehow it all came together well enough to hit the track last month for a shakedown run, and an unexpected win (rain races are great!)

There is still a TON to do. As you can see the cool guy light bodywork is not done yet. There is more work on the motor, and we have some outside the box ideas for the rear suspension. However, the result is a a car that is already lighter than the Rabbit was, without the light hood/fenders/quarters/hatch, so there is hope to get this thing down where it needs to be.

I will post updates as progress continues.

do want. Love the fiberglass work, was wondering how to get the weight down to 1500 lbs and that explains a lot! Work like this makes my labors seem even more trivial :)

Thanks guys. Chuck and Rob can really work some magic in that shop.

The fiberglass is for the molds. The bodywork will be carbon. The target weights are 1530 for the 1.5 liter or 1663 with the 1.6. As it sits in those last pictures it scaled at 1713 with driver. That is with the fiberglass fenders that weigh more than stock steel ones, and a steel hood. We should make weight and be able to balast it back up.

Thanks man. But really. With no development at all, and running the old motor, it was not expected to win. There is some very tough competition in this class. The win was absolutely a gift of the rain, because Chuck is a literal Rainmeister in the race car.

Well the car got through the Cat National race weekend at Road America in one peice.

Got the first dry session in the car during qualifying on Saturday. Rob grafted the flares and airdam/splitter from the Rabbit on before they made the trip. The car was a bit loose, and Chuck took it cautiously as he got to know the new ride. Qualified 3rd, but 9 seconds off the lap record holder in FP, and we shot ourselves in the foot by installing the wheel fan on the right front such that it depressed the schraeder valve in the stem and went flat on lap 1. We did our first ever tire change in an SCCA sprint race, and he went out and got a finish with a different size wheel and compund of tire on the RF.

Sunday ran a bit faster - 7 seconds off the fast guy, and finished 3rd. Still not running as fast as the Rabbit did with narrower wheels/narrower track/smaller valves/more weight, but good for a first real weekend. The primary goal right now is to get the motor right and bring competitive power to the next race. After that the bodywork will get back underway.

I brought my camera but took 0 pictures. I will try to do better next time.

I am a block South of Wheaton North. But the Scirocco is 5 hours further South, near St. Louis. The only project stuff going on in the Garagemahal here is a standalone conversion for an 86 GTI race car, ressurection of a 91 Jetta as a short term commutur / future race project, and disassembly of an 85 diesel for spare body parts...

I will let you all know the next time the Scirocco makes it up to Road America, and we will see you there.

Check out the videos from the trip last weekend in the events/gatherings forum here...

Some pictures from the May race at Road America, with the Rabbit splitter grafted on, the carbon hood and some temporary flares added to the stock fenders.

We need some good ideas for what to put on the side of the 'power dome' on the hood.
"8 valves of fury" is the best I can come up with. Anyone more creative have a suggestion?

Quick update -
The big block and new fuel injection combined with the Scirocco chassis added over 10mph straightaway over the Rabbit last year.
Unfortunately #3 rod and piston (or was that #2? Need to look again) put some huge holes in both sides of the block in qualifying session 3 at the runoffs. Game over. Maybe 9400rpm is a touch high...

Looks like the good head is salvagable. Plans are to focus on making all the existing bits work better, add dry sump and add a dog box 5 speed over the winter.

The ventilated block put a big dent in the budget for 2011. The head is just about done being repaired, and will go on a 'B' motor for the season. We will likely treat 2011 as a development year only - get the fuel injection and the data-logger/dash configured, get the new rear suspension, work on the dry sump and the new transmission, and just try to have everything working right by season's end. Then next year start with a known quantity and get the A motor back together.

Finally making progress again - time to get rid of the steel fenders and quarters with flares tacked on. The goal is to loose some more weight and improve the aero.

Here are the beginnings of the forms for the fronts:
Image

The rears are in process too:
Image

Now that the fuel injection works, and we know what the issue was with the old motor, hopes are high for the 2012 season.
