This past August, a coworker of mine approached me asking for help selling her car since I am the resident gearhead.
She hadn't driven it in about a month then, and it definitely needed some work to be a reliable daily.
I checked out the car, and we put it up for sale everywhere we could find, but there were no bites at all.
Fast forward to about three weeks ago, she asked if I would buy it.
I lowballed her, and to my surprise, she accepted my offer and I bought a (pretty much stock) '95 Cabrio with 102k and a 5-speed.

The car hadn't even been started in about six months, so the battery was dead and she had to be jumped, but she started right up and with the help of a friend, I relocated the car from Logan Square in Chicago to Downers Grove. We stopped to wash her along the way because there was so much debris and dirt built up, I had to wash it away:

I'm new to the MKIII world, so I will have a lot of questions and parts needed.
Are there any resident MKIII gurus?

I know Dmytro and Jake have a lot of knowledge with MKIII. Hit them up with any questions they'll be the quickest to let you know probably.

Very nice buy dude!!

You can start with chip upgrade and crank pulley, it will really wake up that 2.slow.
Mine had a K&N drop in filter, autotech chip and Eurosport light weight pulley and put down 121whp and 134wtq and that was with way more miles on it.
I'm selling my crank pulley, see my post on classifieds.

My Golf just flipped 160k and does not leak or burn a drop of oil and you know how I drive my cars.
How's the under carriage on your cabrio??

MKIIIs tend to rust away from the bottom up if not looked after in that area.
Get some racelands for it, set of BBS wheels and will have one cool ride.

Thanks for all the positive feedback, everyone!
I have a laundry list of replacement parts that need to be fixed before I start thinking about performance.
The bottom of the car isn't rusted, but both front fenders are rusting behind the wheel. No one would have replacement fenders, would they?

I had a giftcard to an online parts supplier, bought a bunch of replacement parts for a tune-up.
Let the amassing of parts begin!

I hope that the tune up includes the distributor!!
Doing the spark plugs and wires is fun, you need to remove the intake manifold so you will need or should replace the gasket between upper and lower intakes. Also a good time to inspect the intake ports and clean them up from carbon build up, check the throttle body too.

Since you will have the intake off the engine inspect the valve cover gasket, if it's wet then you should replace that too and don't forget to look at the vacuum lines, those tend to rot away after a while.

Just inspect the gasket that is between the upper and lower intakes, if there are no crack in it you should be ok.
You should joey mod the bumpers..... if you do let me know I will tell you which paint to buy.

Nice buy. What are your goals with it? You don't need to take the intake mani off for spark plugs. I would hockey puck the front and pass side engine mounts for better response and drive-ability overall(if you want cheap, otherwise invest in some bfi mounts). I would rebuild the shifter by replacing all the bushings ( makes a world of a difference). A/C delete is very simple on these things if it doesn't work. There's a whole laundry list of things you can do on mk3s. Lmk if you have questions.

First and foremost, it needs a brake system overhaul.
I'm not planning on converting it to 5-lug, but it needs new pads, rotors, drums, shoes, lines, e-brake cables, etc.

After that, I dunno. I definately want to put it on coilovers and a set of widened steelies. Does anyone have Corrado steelies?

Today I picked up up an original shift boot and knob along with a set of OEM pedals (previous owner installed a Momo shift knob and pedals).

This past Saturday (2/18), I drove over to where it is being stored for now with the intention of removing the license plates and the iPass for the previous owner. It was so nice out that I decided to drive it around the vacant industrial park and snapped a few more photos to show everyone what I'm dealing with.
Needless to say, the previous owner left a lot of junk in her car:
Image
I already cleaned out a TON of old laundry and towels along with a full set of five white plates and bowls and pint glasses (albeit from IKEA) - I put them through a dishwashing cycle and gave them to my girlfriend. I put some baking soda inside when I got it because it was smelling of something AWFUL. Luckily it has done it's job well.

Someone was asking me what wheels are on the car - they are 15" Borbet Type H's:
Image
If anyone wants to buy them, make me an offer. They have brand new Kuhmo's and I'd be willing to trade for some 4x100 15" Corrado or 16" Beetle steelies.

Forgive me, as I am so new to the MK3 world - what headlamps are these?
At the Brat Stop meet, Jake suggested they are GTI headlamps? I guess all I want to know is if they can be taken apart and joey-modded.
Image

Lastly - as I was cleaning out the trunk I found something that looked like a CD changer. But I tucked my phone near it and took a photo - it turned out to be a cellular transceiver! Maybe from around when it was originally purchased?

That puppy could use a rebuilt cylinder head, a spare steering wheel, a header, an extra front strut, a set of 14" Zandvoorts... : )

Today I bought all necessary components for the brake overhaul. Pads, rotors, drums, shoes, cables, etc, etc.
All this beautiful weather is making me want to work on it sooner!

It's a shot in the dark, but does anyone have an unmolested set of Ronal Teddy Bears?
