I don't have deep pockets, but I use my parent's detached garage and my Dad's tools. I just pay for the materials to do all the work - paint, body filler, sandpaper, primer, reducer, paper towels, etc.

Last night I was hoping it would rain - and it did!
When you paint a car, you want some moisture in the air and you also want it to be a little bit cooler than normal. This does a few things: first, it keeps dust particles out of the air (well, at least more than usual, especially in an old dusty garage like mine) and second, it helps the paint adhere to the surface you're painting onto. As I mentioned previously, the 95°+ days we were having the past few weeks would not have been optimal for painting. At any rate, this morning it was about 77° out and the Cabrio is red again!

I'm stoked on how awesome it came out - it's super shiny even before any type of wetsanding/buffing.
Now it's time to take a break from this and let the paint dry for about 12+ hours.

I remeber when I painted my MK2 GLI in my buddys garage, the primer turned out soo good that I didnt want to actually finish painting it.
Nothing is impossible if you have the tools, space and time.

After you paint a car, there are still various tiny imperfections in the clear coat that need to be sanded down.
Today I went from 1,000-grit to 1,200-grit to 1,500-grit to 3,000-grit sandpaper to get the clear coat perfect.

After you get to 3,000-grit, then you can go back and buff the car out, which actually gets it way shinier than it was after it was first painted. (Pardon the buffing compound.)

I'm super pleased with how the paint turned out. I was a little bit worried about if the color would match the rest of the car, and it does.
My biggest hurdle is over, now I just have to reassemble the car. I plan on making a run to a dealership tomorrow to attempt to locate some parts like mirror caps and door handle gaskets and probably have an extra key made. :cool:

In other news, I'm re-assembling the car and I've lost the eight headlight mounting hardware bolts. Does anyone on these board perchance have a random MK3 that they're also parting out, that may have these bolts? It's such an odd request, but I've scoured the garage and I'm usually very organized with my nuts and bolts...

Don't know about Ace, but Home Depot always had the old VW blanks stocked, had a bunch cut over the years for the B3.

Well, she made it out to Treffen 16, all put back together and shiny. Late on Saturday night I put the 16" Audi wheels on and lowered the car, to find that the tires were approximately .25" away from the fender, and I didn't want to risk scraping or tearing into the sidewall of the tire, so I raised the car. It's still sitting a little too high for me, but for the show it was good. Also, now it overheats - only after I replaced the coolant flange.... :hmmm:
I wanted to thank everyone who commented on the bodywork and paint, I appreciate it.
Thanks to everyone who took photos of the car. I'm still waiting to hear back from N8 Photography because I paid for a quick photo session and I can't wait to see the results. Here are some photos that Nick, Krzys, and Karl took!

Look how different the red color got picked up by all 3 different cameras! I like the 3rd angle best, lol, and seems like 3rd has more red color of the real red...don't you think??

Also known as over saturation hahaha. Look at the parking lot stripes!

I agree, a little lower would look nice, but I know what you're saying. To have the tires running on BRAND NEW body work would really suck.

Bringing this thread back from a 10-month hiatus!

Car is in the shop for an alignment, overheating issues, and motor mounts.
Possibly bringing the car to Scooter's and Euro Hangar later this month.
