Another race car build - starting with bare, stripped shell

Post by FVGNGN 1 » Tue May 14, 2013 11:50 am

Yes I am dumb enough to try to work on two race car projects at once. A friend had finished stripping an a2 Jetta coupe to bare metal and started putting a cage in it for the same class that I am building the Golf for - SCCA H Production. His shop is in Santa Barbara, so this thing does not have ANY rust on it. With a back injury, and a pretty extensive home remodeling project underway, Gary decided he won't be able to finish and race the car, so he asked me to pick it up from him and get it on track. So while it is "free", there is a fair amount of time and $$ that needs to go into it to be race ready.

I spent last weekend out there working on the car, trying to get it to roller state so we can go pick it up during a family camping trip to Yosemite later in the summer. Here are a few pics of the starting point, and initial progress. It is nice to be doing a full dedicated build with such a solid starting point. The car will end up very stiff, and hopefully very competitive.

I still plan to get the Golf done and racing this year, but hope to switch over to this car for 2014.

OK why are these things not showing in the same orientation that they are on my photo hosting site? Oh well...

EDIT - and now the next morning they are straight. I am obviously doing it wrong somehow...

is this the "drag car" that we played with in your garage years and years ago?

No. That thing is long gone. (though the doors may still be in the garage attic...) This car is in Santa Barbara right now. It is super clean with no rust. Will be going to get it later in the summer.

More progress on the driver door bars.

Car should be a roller by now. Need to figure out when to take that California vacation this summer to go pick it up.

Plated in the dash bar and strut tower braces

With a seat mocked up *(need to make sure there is not a vertical bar right where my elbow sits)

All tacked in place

A big thanks to Tim Wallace for the top notch fab work on the door bars. They are pretty much exactly what I envisioned.

New tires and brakes on the motor home, and added reinforcements to the hitch frame. Getting ready for an early August trip to pick up the car.

It is a roller right now. Looking forward to a lot of winter progress after the Golf project wraps up.

Got home last night from The Big Road Trip, with the car in tow.

Once the garage gets organized enough to get it unloaded I will get some updates posted.

OK. Got the car in the garage. Made space for a few more engine blocks and hoods and doors that came along too.

I need to set aside an evening to trim all the extra doors down to weight, so that they can more easily be put up in the attic with the CF and FG hoods, and out of our way.

Here are some pics of the garage now, the LCAs that will likely serve as spares once we get the tubular ones done, and that Walt Puckett header that will be compared with the 1-1/2" primary and 1-5/8" primary Techtonics versions and the custom Burns one.
