Today I took the family to the Rock River Thresheree in Edgerton, WI. It's an annual get-together celebrating vintage and historic farm and construction machinery, steam power, and the way life was like in days gone by.
I'm a sucker for vintage engineering, I absolutely LOVE digging into history to see how things were made, engineered and operated. It's an awesome event, and a great way to end the summer.
Besides the usual Rumley Oil-Pulls, John Deere and Caterpillar dozers, and the antique pile driver, I came across this little gem.
It's a water pump, belt-driven by a small single-cylinder, hit-miss, gasoline (or kerosene) fired engine. Nothing really special there, there were hundreds of them on display. This one was special, because it featured a 3-speed, 2 gear 'transmission' (there were twin sets of gears, but it could have been operated with one set).
The small driven gear has 3 steps, each corresponding to 3 wobbles/heights/speeds on the large working gear. On the intake (pull) stroke, it's geared for power, there is a second transitional 'shifting' gear, and the outlet (push) stroke is geared for speed. 3 speeds PER REVOLUTION.
The owner (who was almost as old as the pump) and I had never seen anything like it before, really amazing engineering. The pump dated to the turn of the century.

I didn't get a chance to get any videos of it running, but it was a trip to watch.
Enjoy the photos.
In these photos, you can see where the gears are 'shifted'

Drag racing is for fast cars, autocrossing is for fast drivers.
