Just read through the thread - this is some really, really cool stuff.

Not that I know much of anything but if you need an extra set of hands, I would love to help out if needed.

A little update. The new motor is in and running well. The tuning on the frankinjection system is going well. The car ran at Gateway in St Louis a few weeks ago. Running much better with the aftermarket ECU controlled CIS-E than the old bosch controlled CIS-E.

Had wrong gearing for Road America, no front air dam/splitter at all (i guess the oil pan was serving as the air dam) and old tires on a hot high 90s high humidity day. Result was about a second off the lap record.

The plan is to bring it up to Road America next weekend for the June Sprints to test it with the right setup on the track that the national championship race will be held on in September. Hopefully more pictures and good results will follow.

If anyone is interested in joining us at Road America, let me know. It is an awesome racing weekend with over 25 classes of road race cars - everything from formula cars to prototypes to GT cars with 700hp V8s to 9000 rpm 8 valve VWs competing on one of the finest race track on the globe (which also has some of the best track food). There is camping on site, the go-kart track is typically running arrive and drive stuff all weekend, and we tend to enjoy some beers at night when we don't have to fix broken race cars. More general info can be found at junesprints.com

Let me know if you want to join to watch and/or help. I will probably head up on Thursday June 14, and return on Sunday June 17 - qualifying is on Thur-Fri and racing is on Sat-Sun. This car will race on Sunday.

Update - actually heading up to Elkhart Lake mid Day on Friday instead of on Thursday. If anyone is planning to or interested in coming up to watch some racing let me know.

Whoops - forgot to update this. Things went well at the June Sprints. The car worked well, and was consistent, and by the end of the weekend was starting to approach the type of competitive pace we are expecting.

Here are some pictures with the temporary fender flare forms and the dry sump system.

Development continues. Chuck is now prepping for the SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI in 3 weeks.

The last outing at MPH in Hastings was a good one. The car is still sporting the 'rough' fender flares that were intended to be forms for the 'real' carbon ones, and will have them on at the runoffs, though likely painted. One of the competitors there was the 2nd place car from last years runoffs, who also had the fastest lap that year. By the end of the weekend Chuck ran with him for about 10 laps at the beginning of the race, turning lap times within 2 tenths.

The good news is that there is still some weight to pull from the fenders by cutting out the original material beneath the flares, and Chuck was using up an old set of the bias ply Hoosier slicks. The new radial slicks have less rolling resistance and pick up some top speed. We are hopeful for a good result next month, but the field is really deep this year. There are probably at least 10 guys that expect to be on the podium in FP.

If you are in the midwest, consider making the trip to Road America on the weekend of September 22-23. The HP race will be first thing on Sunday morning, and will have two Scirocco IIs and a Golf that are potential podium cars. The FP race will be first race after lunch and Chuck's Scirocco will be the lone hope for VW success in a tough field.

So much work, I'm always amazed by this build. Any info on the franken-CIS? I see what looks like stock lines going to presumably stock type mechanical injectors, but no fuel distributor? Can't quite see what they're connected to. No jetronic box either I bet, what, Mega?

You nailed it.

Took the top section of the fuel distributor.
Put injector bungs under it.
Fabbed up a square "fuel rail" - square of 1" AL with X drilled path.
Mounted adjustable FPR to one opening and the fuel feed to the other.
The system uses 4 fuel injectors to meter and distribute the fuel to the CIS lines and injectors. All controlled by MS3.

It works great, but it was enough of a PITA to conceived, test, develop, race that we figured no one else would, and we asked for the rules to be changed to allow swapping from CIS to electronic injection.

The rule has been changed, so the system will be converted to traditional electronic injection for 2013.

Interesting, love to see pics of the fuel dizzy and rail setup. So you have electronic injectors feeding mechanical injectors? Not sure I get where the old fuel dizzy comes in to play. It's like going analog to digital and back to analog, glorious!

Just to keep 'stock' mechanical injection without stock management? Pretty cool workaround.

What are you doing to the dizzy to work around the metering plate and plunger function?

We gutted the whole thing, and just used the top casting of the fuel dizzy as a convenient way to mate the electric injectors to the CIS lines. The airflow plate and all associated mechanism is not there. Yeah it was an odd thing to do.

The system is coming off the car right now. If for some reason someone wanted it, the hardware is probably available.

Fascinating, I might want to tinker with that. Let me know if the hardware is going to be cheap or free. It would be a good way to clean up the engine compartment without going crazy. I could vastly simplify the wiring when my car goes back together.

It has been too long since the last update.

The car was a handful to drive at the 2012 runoffs. It turns out there are some tub differences between the Rabbit and the S1, and the rear suspension was binding in right handers, making the handling pretty wicked. While the motor was working well, and Chuck was able to wrestle some respectable lap times out of it, he ran most of the race in 12th, and pulled off after it tried to spin a few times.

For 2013 the focus was on improving the fuel injection further - moving from the frankinjection to honest to goodness electronic fuel injectors, mounted where they belong, due to a rule change allowing the CIS injectors to be tossed - and removing weight from the nose, followed by improving the handling.

The first event in St. Louis in April went very well. However the 2nd event, the June Sprints at Road America, was a bit more challenging. The car was a bit unstable on the straight at high speed - something that we had only seen at this track. In the end some alignment and spring rate changes made it a lot more drivable, and Chuck qualified 4th in FP with a 2:38. This is a bit off the pole pace, but the first time the car worked as expected was the last qualifying session, so we expected a consistent, competitive race.

In the end Chuck turned a number of lap times similar to his qualifying effort in the race, and ran much of it in 4th, while 3 miatas pulled a 15-20s gap on him. Then the 2nd and 3rd place cars broke about 2/3 through the race, and the Scirocco came home in 2nd place. It was a great weekend.

Here are some bad pictures of the new lighter fenders.

Some engine trials and tribulations.
Found some detonation issues on engine inspection following a race in early August. Some damage to the valves, main bearings and likely the rings. The head has been refreshed, and new bearings are in.
Spent some time with the engine management guys, and realized that we probably don't have the right fuel. Moving to 116 from 112 seems to have helped, and backing off the timing a bit. Ran a test day at Gateway last week, and all seems well again.
Doing a re-ring before the runoffs, and hoping to bring a competitive power plant to Road America.

In other news, moving to Penske shocks from a sprint car seemed to make a big difference over the very old Carreras of unknown quality/condition that were on the car when it was purchsed. Whudathunk.

Short update - With the motor running well, and some fresh penske rear shocks the car was still a handful at the runoffs all week (Sept 16-21). Finally after big suspension setup changes, and removing front downforce the car started behaving well, and Chuck took the green from mid pack with a fast, driveable car.

Unfortunately a lap later he had a big off at The Kink, kept it off the wall drivers left, but not the one driver's right. The hit was hard. Harder than the one he had in the Orange Rabbit at Mid-Ohio. Took the RF corner off, and wrinkled the floor a bit. A big financial hit to a low budget effort.

But plans are underway to put together a fresh motor, and make repairs to the chassis. Not quite sure whether the 2014 Runoffs at Laguna Seca are in the cards, due to the long tow, but 2015 in Datyona is possible, and 2016 at Mid-Ohio is for damn sure.
